All The [Trek] 90 – Booby Trap

This Trek Tuesday man loves machine a little too much. Again.

Episode 54: Booby Trap

October 30th, 1989

The episode opens with Geordi on a terrible date. It’s immediate obvious that everything is rehearsed and he’s making all of the wrong moves.

"Wow. This is nice and all, but do you think I could possibly just go drown myself in the Holodeck's fake ocean?"

“Wow. This is nice and all, but do you think I could possibly just go drown myself in the Holodeck’s fake ocean?”

The date abruptly ends and Geordi rushes to the bar to seek Guinan’s advice on women. I like his style. I always rush to the bar to seek whiskey’s advice on…everything.

A whole lot of filler happens, but the gist of it is this: The Enterprise responds to a distress signal that is 1,000 years old. The Enterprise gets caught in the same trap that killed the other crew. Any energy they expend is redirected back at the Enterprise. Geordi decides to utilize the Holodeck to solve their problem. He conjures up the engineer who created the blueprints for the Enterprise. Predictably, she is a woman and Geordi falls for her facsimile.

He falls for her HARD. Gibson Girl haircut and all.

He falls for her HARD. Gibson Girl haircut and all.

They mumbo jumbo their way to a solution, something something sometimes you can’t depend on automated computers and have to have the human element blah blah blah.

The driving force behind this episode is Geordi working through his insecurity around women. The imminent death of every living soul on the Enterprise is just the vehicle for that journey. The plight of the rest of the crew is compelling, but after establishing the crisis we don’t spend much time with anyone other than Geordi and his Holodeck gal pal. In the end I don’t know if you can really say Geordi learns anything because he kisses her and immediately ends the program.

It's creepy because this is an actual person in the Star Trek universe and she's literally out there living her own life and oh god there are some really awful porny implications to all of this.

I finally appreciate what an excellent job Levar Burton has done at fully realizing a flawed character. Everyone in the cast certainly has the acting chops for TNG, but Burton is able to take things to an entirely new level with Geordi. He doesn’t attempt to be nonstop endearing. He allows Geordi to be annoyed, entitled, insecure, and so much more. It reads in every scene, and now my annoyance with the character has turned into a deeper respect for the actor.

p.s. the Holodeck continues to be one of my biggest obsessions in this show. The moral implications it continuously brings up worry the hell out of me. Are there any restrictions on what people can do? Are you shutting down sentience when you end a program? Is everyone a murderer and molester if the end the program or kiss something that really has no choice in the matter? Should I have opened with a joke about this episode being called “booby trap” and Geordi being sitracted by boobies? I need answers. Hopefully, in time, I will get them.
