All The [Trek] 94 – The Defector

This Trek Tuesday an old faux pas comes back to bite Picard in the ass.

Episode 58: The Defector

January 1st, 1990

Honestly, this episode is very ho-hum considering how high passions supposedly run.. Long story short, the Romulans are pissed things didn’t work out as intended in The Enemy. They’re itching for a fight, so they trick out a defector with some false information and lure the Enterprise into a trap. Then Picard plays a game os chicken with the Romulans and they…run away. The titular defector offs himself and leaves a letter for his family…which the Enterprise cannot deliver because Romulan relations are murderously strained at best.

Overall Rating: (2/5)

The monologue delivered by the defector is the only compelling portion of this episode. It’s the general guff about a better future for the children blah blah blah, but it’s the only real meat of the episode plot-wise. Data also gets a wonderful little opening scene where he acts out some Shakespeare…but they could have tacked that into almost any episode. Shakespeare is woven through the episode’s narrative, but it’s diluted to the point where it would have been better in a more Picard-centric storyline.

Marvel at the tights. All other episode elements pale in comparison.
