All The [Trek] 97 – Déjà Q

ATT is back, and so is Q!!

Episode 61: Déjà Q

February 5th, 1990

In this episode of TNG the prayers of many Enterprise crew members are answered when a naked man falls from the heavens. I mean, they probably want to prevent some random inhabited planet’s moon from rocketing into its surface as well but MORE IMPORTANTLY

They're loving it.

They’re loving it.

So it turns out Q is kicked out of the Continuum, transported to the Enterprise, and turned into a powerless human due to his many transgressions…but no one on the Enterprise believes him. There’s an entire plot about saving a planet and aliens trying to kill Q now that he’s human (because he’s sort of always been a bastard), but all of that pales in comparison to the Q/Data dynamic.

Data is assigned as Q’s babysitter. The two of them discuss the nature of humanity, the strange new sensations Q is experiencing, and how Data wishes he could experience what Q has been “punished” with. There are several hilarious moments and several instances of self-sacrifice, but any description I can give pales in comparison to the episode. It’s definitely a must-see.

Overall Rating: (4/5)

Overall - 4 out of 5

The voice used to tell Q stories is almost as good as the one used to tell Data stories…to have both of them paired in this episode is a treat. Was this a perfect episode? Nah. Was it funny as hell to watch the crew figure out what to do with a “powerless” Q? Yeah!

Also, discussing the end of this episode with my father is one of my favorite childhood memories.
