E17: The Wizard (1989)

E17 The Wizard

It’s the podcast where a filmmaker, a comedian, an actor and an author strike out on runaway mission to set the HIGH SCORE for revisiting the 80s movies we loved or might have missed with 2018 eyes!

This episode has it all: warp whistles, dinosaurs, some light grifting, truckers helping children to gamble, romance between 13 year olds, and oh yeah… some really unfortunate treatments of some really difficult topics but hey… its also a commercial for Mario Bros. 3 and the Power Glove… its so bad!

THIS is Episode 17: The Wizard… a movie selection from 1989

Deep Cut Recommendations

As we all know, IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes and awesome places like that will always give you some recommendations… People who liked THIS also liked THIS. Your Most Excellent Hosts have their own recommendations, perhaps a bit further off the beaten track.

Erica sort of recommends Rain Man… which is like a better, Oscar winning, adult version of this movie without the video games. IMDB says… Selfish yuppie Charlie Babbitt’s father left a fortune to his savant brother Raymond and a pittance to Charlie; they travel cross-country.

Craig recommends Little Miss Sunshine, another better version of the same sort of movie… except also way better. And also Oscar winning. IMDB says… A family determined to get their young daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant take a cross-country trip in their VW bus.

Krissy recommends The Grinder, an awesome show starring Fred Savage that was cancelled after only one season. IMDB says… Television lawyer Dean Sanderson moves back to his small home town after a stint in Hollywood, thinking that his time on TV qualifies him to run his family’s law firm.

AND Krissy recommends visiting the Cabazon Dinosaurs with your family. Find more info HERE.

Nathan recommends Over the Top if you like silly road trip movies. Fun fact, the big rig that Spanky drives in the Wizard IS the big rig from Over the Top! IMDB says… Tough trucker Lincoln Hawk is determined to win back his son and triumph at the world arm wrestling championships.

Next up on the Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast is Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (1985)

IMDB says… When eccentric man-child Pee-Wee Herman gets his beloved bike stolen in broad daylight, he sets out across the U.S. on the adventure of his life.
